Omaha Votes on the OU-NU Merger

In a special election on December 12, 1967, Omaha voters approved the merger of the Municipal University of Omaha with the University of Nebraska by a 4 to 1 margin. There was general consensus among the electorate that the merger would mean financial stability for the new University of Nebraska at Omaha. The majority of the Omaha electorate were convinced that the new University of Nebraska Omaha would ease their tax burden and result in an institution equal to that in Lincoln. The local business community supported the measure at least in part because of predicted increases in support for the Omaha Education, Business Administration, and Engineering programs. OU-NU merger ceremonies occurred on July 1, 1968.
